One of our favorite methods for reinforcing concrete slabs is using rebar.

What is Rebar, and How Does It Work?

Rebar is a dense, rod of steel that can be weaved deep below the surface of the concrete to provide tensile strength to the concrete slab. Usually, the outer surface of rebar is grooved, to better bind to freshly poured concrete. Using a steel cutting blade, these rods can be cut to fit your desired area, and weaved in and out of each other to form a grid. Rebar Reinforced Concrete For rebar to be effective it must be surrounded by concrete on all sides. To keep the rebar grid off of the ground, we refer to an old masonry trick using pieces of brick or stone to hold the bars in place before pouring fresh concrete. These pieces of brick or stone will fuse with the concrete as it dries, so there is no need to do anything else. This eliminates the chance of mistake, since you can continue to pour concrete right over the bars without having to remove any holders.
